To put it the most simply: tags are a way for you to categorize your blog!
Use tags to clean up your blog a bit and classify your articles according to their themes.

If your blog's about celebrities: every time you write an article about Lady Gaga, add the tag "Lady Gaga" to your article.
This will allow your friends to find all your articles about Lady Gaga by clicking on the "Lady Gaga" tag in your Info column.
